Oh, it's gonna be a busy weekend. We had a minimum day of school today because the teacher's got a lot to do. We did verse quiz, spelling test, Latin quiz and watched a video on bees for science. And called it a school day. Tomorrow is Missie Lou's birthday party. I must admit, I am not a birthday party type of mom. I'm sorry. I'm finally starting to accept myself for the mom that I am and not compare myself to all the other moms who throw birthday parties and take their kids to the park and actually play with them instead of reading a book, and don't mind a huge mess in the kitchen if it means decorating Christmas cookies. But, Missie Lou has been talking about having a birthday party for several months now and she's turning six on Sunday, and she's been having a hard time adjusting from being the baby of the family to the middle and there's just all sorts of other things going on with her, so I figured, whatever.... I'll throw her a birthday party. It'll be a butterfly birthday party. I just finished decorating the cake.
Usually the cakes I decorate are really awful and lame. I'm just not a cake decorating type of mom, either. But, I decided to give it a shot this time. The colors didn't turn out the way I wanted. They're kind of dull. I even used the gel coloring, but .....no. Doesn't look right to me.
However, the cake did turn out pretty good, if I do say so myself. For a first effort. And for the colors not being to my liking. That's not brown. It's a dull purple. How do you get a bright vibrant purple? Certainly not by adding more red gel. I have no idea. Oh well.
I've got the games prepared and ready to go. Yes, we are playing games. No bounce houses and clowns here. I've been to those types of parties. They don't turn me on. Plus, bounce houses cost a lot of money.
But, we're going to do a little butterfly scavenger hunt and then decorate plastic pots and plant asclepias tuberosa (aka Butterfly Weed) seeds. And then.... if that's not enough, I made little butterfly cakes (I got this great cake pan that makes small butterfly cakes) and each girl is going to get some frosting and doo-dads and decorate a couple of those. So, with all that, lunch, cake and presents, it should be an acceptable birthday party. Missie Lou is very excited and I'm happy she is.
Bye Bye!
