New Year's Traditions!

What do you think of when you hear the word, "New Year's Cookie"? If you're a Mennonite, you think of a yummy, deep-fried raisin fritter coated with sugar. Oh yeah. That's what I'm talking about! And tonight, being New Year's Day, we went to my mom and dad's house for faspa (that's low German for "light meal") and New Year's Cookies. New Year's Cookies are fairly easy to make. And I can say that as I sat in the rocking chair and watched my mom make them. But, you just make a yeast batter with raisins in them and them drop them by spoonfuls into hot oil and cook till they're golden brown. When they're done cooking, you roll them in sugar and let them cool a tad bit.See these smiles? That's what eating New Year's Cookies will do to you.And you know what the best thing about New Year's Cookies are? You have to eat them all as soon as they are made. Seriously. They do not keep. Once they cool off they get kind of soggy and gross. So, how ever many you make, you have to eat them right then.Yeah, it's tough to have to sit there by a bowl of all that sugary deep-fried yumminess and eat to your heart's content, but... it's gotta be done.
